YOUR GUIDE TO PRECUTS …….. all you need to know

CHARM PACKS, JELLY ROLLS, HONEY BUNS, JOLLY BARS, LAYER CAKES, FAT QUARTERS…Sounds like they ought to be in a dessert shop! But they aren’t! You will find these cute sounding names in fabric and quilt shops!

We have a lot of customers who are quilters and many of these names are familiar to you, but do you ever get the measurements of each mixed up?

Well, this article is here to help. Below is a chart showing different sizes for different pre-cuts

Multiples of these cuts can come from one yard of fabric. It’s most convenient to instead of trying to cut all your squares, rectangles and strips to buy the sizes you need for your project that have been pre-cut for you and also arranged in coordinating packs of prints and solids eliminating the frustration of trying to find just the right assortment of colors and prints that will look terrific together.

Fat Quarters are also a great size to use for many of our In The Hoop Projects that you will find at our online shop Embroidery by EdytheAnne. A Fat Quarter is 18″ x 21″ and comes in bundles of coordinating fabrics. Beautiful designs and colors professionally curated for you! You will find so many varieties at Fat Quarter Shop & also at Fabric.com that it will make your mouth water! You’ll think you ARE in a candy shop! Fat Quarter Bundles are also a great way to “audition” a fabric collection before buying large quantities.

One of the projects that lend themselves to the use of a Fat Quarter Bundle is our Mug Mat Collection. We have over 250 In The Hoop Mug Mats and a Fat Quarter is perfect! You may prefer the Half Yard Bundles for our Home Decor Collection of Table Runners, Centerpieces, Placemats, etc… Our Bags & Purse Collection is another great project that is perfect for the coordinated Fat Quarter Bundles (if making the smaller sizes) Half Yard Bundles for the larger bags. Usually our purses, which are all In The Hoop, are the cutest when you use several coordinated fabrics. Sometimes trying to coordinate prints, stripes, plaids & checks together while at the same time keeping the color choices pleasing can be a daunting task. That is completely taken care of for you when you purchase Pre-Cut bundles that a professional curator has arranged together!

Here is the way the pre-cuts are cut from a yard of fabric. A Fat Quarter is basically 1/4 of a yard, therefore you can get 4 fat quarters from one yard of fabric…hence Fat Quarters! A Fat Eighths is 1/8 of a yard…hence Fat Eighth. You can get 8 Fat Eights from one yard of fabric or 2 from each Fat Quarter.

Layer Cakes are 10″ Squares and Charm Packs are either 5″ or 2 1/2″ squares and then the Jelly Rolls are 2 1/2″ strips. So, that is it in a nut shell! Hope you have found this quick run down on all those luscious names helpful and remember THIS candy store selection has 0 calories, so eat up!
